Modern Bathrooms

What is a Modern Bathroom? It is a term that gets used frequently but does not necessarily mean that it is something new from this decade. A modern bathroom is a design concept that became popular in Europe in the mid-20th Century. This concept refers to creating a bathroom space within your house that has a complimentary style and aesthetically pleasing design that seamlessly combines a creative geometric form and the technical function of a bathroom but without any extravagant frills and unnecessary clutter that made up older Victorian style bathrooms.

A Modern Bathroom’s main feature is having a sleek, simplistic design that makes the most of the available space in the room whether it is a small 3 piece bathroom or a large master bathroom.  Using this type of seamless approach allows the designer to create a bathroom that feels larger, giving you a more open and less claustrophobic space that does not leave out any of the necessities that you require in the bathroom to be functional. This is also complimented by the cabinetry and fixtures sharing a rounded or slightly curved design that does not feel imposing to the area around it, giving you a more open and elegant feel.

The materials and colour palette would be complimentary of this open space feeling, using soft natural colours and tiles that give out a statement by using geometric shapes and softer shades, rather than using strong, deep colours. Generally modern bathrooms would use a base colour for the bulk of the furniture as a white or grey. By having a simple base colour theme to work with it allows you to add more subtle design flair to give the bathroom some additional character. Chrome fixtures or wood grain cabinets are some subtle but striking accents that can be added to a sleek and modern design and you can always add a small pot plant to give a natural green feel to the space.

With the theme of making the most of the space available in a modern bathroom design, freestanding bathtubs are the best way to keep the functionality of having a bath tab without dedicating most of the space for it. Having a simple geometric rectangular freestanding bath tab will take up less space than you might think, matching the colour palette of the other furniture in the bathroom, while a shower in the corner of the bathroom that is complimented with tall glass doors will give the illusion of more open space.
